The Arnold Arboretum • This grande dame of American arboretums was established in 1872 and remains a vital and respected horticultural institute. Visit the interactive website and spend hours happily clicking on an amazing number of photographs, from historical shots dating back to 1889 to this month’s featured plant. Or browse through e-journal articles to your heart’s content.

Dumbarton Oaks·
The gardens of Dumbarton Oaks are a treasure for lovers of landscape design. Created by renowned landscaper Beatrix Jones Farrand, Dumbarton Oaks flows from one beautifully crafted space to another. View the gardens online, but take some time to visit the real thing too—you’ll be inspired!

Longwood Gardens•
Winterthur •  Two of America’s premier gardens are just a pleasant drive away. A must for garden-lovers, Longwood’s display gardens are breathtaking, and even in winter, visitors can enjoy gorgeous shows in the conservatory. Nearby Winterthur, also a renowned museum, boasts a 60-acre spread of spectacular natural gardens. Check the mouth-watering websites for tour schedules.

Montgomery County Environmental Protection  —click on Departments, then Environmental Protection. This helpful website provides lots of general gardening and environmental information, with special emphasis on green and sustainable landscaping. Brookside Gardens • Another area treasure, Brookside Gardens combines beautifully landscaped gardens with great educational programs and garden advice for homeowners. Check the website for upcoming events.

English Gardens•
If you love English gardens, you’ll love the British National Trust website. Revel in the colors and swoon over the picturesque walls and pergolas while exploring ideas for your own garden. Ladew Topiary Gardens • If you’re a fan of Edward Scissorhands, Ladew, located in Monkton, MD, will be just your cup of tea! Named “The most outstanding topiary garden in America” by the Garden Club of America, this lovely and amusing old plantation will charm you with its amazing topiaries and beautiful garden rooms.
